The Kapitos

By Ian Wright - Posted on 16 June 2009

So first excuse this EXTREMELY visually displeasing way of showing you these shots - little tiny pictures in a straight row down one side of the page... it's not my choice though. If I try to switch anything up on this sketchy internet connection, it makes me pay. Anyways. Behold, the Kapitos.

I stayed with this family in town for a good three weeks or so, before moving out to a nearby village. They were all incredibly accomodating and I feel like I am still part of their family. (I go over there to visit every once in a while)

They love pigeons. Enough to build not one, but two, pigeon mansions in the backyard.

There's pigeons everywhere. What do they do with them? On one of the last nights I stayed there, we enjoyed some smoked pigeon with our nsima. Enjoyed...? Questionable.

This is little Earnest and his friend Aaron, posing for the cam in front of a bright white spread of maize flower, left outside for the day to dry.

These are the parents - Everence and Dorothy. For any EWB people reading... yeah, I found my Dorothy! But no, they're quite well off... she's nice, but not my Dorothy.

My clothes drying across the whole yard. (House to latrine)

Everence going hard on a doorframe he was building one morning for their new chicken house. He used the shabbiest lumber that had clearly been used multiple times already. After pulling out bent nails, there were more holes than wood.

 Earnest doing an Elvis pose?

Little Golden playing happily with a machete. Yaaaay, machete.

The daughter Lucia was very shy. I had to go paparazzi on her for this picture. This was the one tap that the family had for running water - it was in the backyard beside the kitchen house. It seems most of the womans' lives are spent outside cooking, cleaning, socializing... the house is just for eating dinner, sleeping, and sometimes accomodating some guests for tea or something.

Take er easy.

Ian

The first-generation Zune was created by Microsoft in close cooperation with Toshiba, which took the design of the Gigabeat S and redeveloped it under the name Toshiba 1089 as registered with the FCC oracle training starting in 2006. Xbox 360 overseer J Allard ran the project, codenamed "Argo," staffed with Xbox and MSN Music Store developersmcp certification who worked on "Alexandria", finalized as Zune Marketplace. Both products were later united under the Zune brand name in the U.S. market. The second-generation Zune 4, 8, and 80 were pmi certifications manufactured by Flextronics. In this generation the touch-sensitive Zune Pad was introduced. The 4 and 8 GB Zunes are flash-based and smaller in size than the 80 GB version. The 30 GB Zune was mcts exams not redesigned. The third-generation Zune 16 and 120 came out September 16, 2008, though are commonly referred to as second-generation as the only hardware change was additional capacity, it was not redesigned.

Hi Ian - had to check out your blog. Your mom has been filling me in on your travels. Very interesting to say the least - killer bees, elections, no electricity, eating 'native' poultry.... I can only imagine the daily, likely hourly, events that make you take a second look. Hope you are taking scads of pictures and keep posting them. The family you stayed with looks lovely. Your mom said you are off to meet with all the other EWB crew. I bet you will enjoy some down time - listening and sharing stories. I plan on getting your mom out on a golf course over the summer - keep her in game shape for when you get back! Safe and Happy Travels!

O man, thanks for checking out this crazy world Michelle!
I need you to make sure that she puts more hours into her short game... as soon as you see her hitting balls on the range, tell her to get her butt over to the green... CHISEL THOSE STROKES FROM HER CARD! (is that how you spell chisel?)

Great photos Ian! Thanks! It's nice to see the people and things that you have talked about. Now that you have photo transmission figured out, we will be looking forward to more.

ian, loving your version of mtv cribs. keep the humor up my friend.

I second Tony on that one! Its awesome that you and Sierra have been able to write so often; have a great time at the retreat, hope its challenging and motivating!

Wuddup Anna!

Thanks for the comment. So I sent you a lil email a while ago, did you get it?
